As part of our ongoing interviews with our members from around the world, World Freight Network (WFN) spoke with Peter Koppermann of Ontour Transport Service in Germany. A WFN Founder Member, Peter shared insights into his journey in the logistics industry, the strengths that make Ontour stand out, and his views on the challenges and future of independent freight forwarding.
Peter’s career in freight forwarding began with a leap of faith. At 23, he accepted an offer to work as a self-employed messenger for a forwarding company—an opportunity that aligned with his entrepreneurial spirit. Less than a year later, he opened his first office at Frankfurt Airport, laying the foundation for what would become Ontour Transport Service.
“I always wanted to start my own business,” Peter recalls. “After 10 months, I decided it was time to go all in.”
Today, Ontour is recognized for its comprehensive logistics solutions, delivered with in-house staff and owned equipment. The company offers full-service logistics across multiple modes of transport, with a standout reputation for its daily UK traffic and rapid, dependable turnaround.
“Our 24/7 AOG [Aircraft on Ground] service is a key differentiator,” Peter explains. “It’s rare in this industry to find that level of around-the-clock dedication.”
As the industry navigates 2025, Peter identifies geopolitical instability and economic uncertainty as primary challenges. However, for Ontour, longevity brings confidence.
“Being independent isn’t the challenge—we’ve been in the market for 35 years,” he states. “It’s the global economic and political environment that demands our attention.”
Peter sees immense value in WFN membership, emphasizing the importance of trusted global partnerships.
“Having reliable partners worldwide who understand our standards enables us to deliver DDP and DDU solutions. Without WFN, this would be impossible.”
Despite mounting administrative requirements and rising technology costs, Peter remains optimistic about the future.
“Logistics is essential—it won’t disappear. But we are required to invest in top-tier IT systems, even though these costs can’t simply be added to freight charges,” he notes.
