WFN Member Interview: Modern Shipping Agencies, Pakistan

As part of our ongoing interviews with our members from around the world, World Freight Network (WFN) spoke with Shoukat Ali of Modern Shipping Agencies, Pakistan. Shoukat shared insights into his journey in the freight forwarding industry, the company’s strengths, and the challenges independent forwarders are expected to face in 2025 and beyond.

How did you start your career in freight forwarding?
“I began my professional journey with a strong determination to make a mark in the business world. My early years were spent gaining experience in trade and logistics-related services, which laid a solid foundation for what was to come. My real passion for freight forwarding was ignited as I worked closely with companies involved in imports and exports, navigating the intricacies of customs clearance, shipping documentation, and international logistics.

Recognizing the critical role of reliable freight partners in global trade, I founded Modern Shipping Agencies with a clear mission: to deliver dependable, efficient, and client-focused freight forwarding services. Over time, we’ve grown into one of Pakistan’s trusted logistics providers, offering comprehensive solutions that cater to the evolving needs of our clients both locally and globally.”

What are your company’s main strengths?
“Modern Shipping Agencies, headquartered in Pakistan, has established itself as a reliable name in freight forwarding, offering a wide spectrum of logistics services. Our main strengths include:

Local Expertise and Global Reach: With a strong presence in key ports and cities across Pakistan, we combine in-depth knowledge of local regulations with a global logistics network. This allows us to navigate complex shipping requirements and deliver seamless international freight solutions.

Continuous Innovation: We invest in technology and process improvements to enhance service quality. Our systems support real-time tracking and documentation, giving clients transparency and peace of mind.”

What are the main challenges facing independent freight forwarders in 2025?
“Independent freight forwarders are facing a rapidly evolving landscape. The key challenges ahead include:

Rising Operational Costs: Escalating fuel prices, port charges, and carrier rate volatility are squeezing margins. For smaller forwarders, competing with multinational players on pricing while maintaining service quality is increasingly difficult.

Digital Transformation Pressures: The industry is moving toward full digital integration—instant quotes, automated documentation, and visibility platforms are now client expectations. However, adopting these technologies requires significant investment and change management, which many smaller firms struggle with.

Carrier Alliances and Rate Control: The dominance of large shipping alliances often leaves little room for independent negotiators. Forwarders with limited volume may find it harder to secure competitive freight rates or guaranteed space.

Regulatory and Sustainability Requirements: Meeting international compliance standards and shifting toward more sustainable logistics practices also demands ongoing investment in both knowledge and infrastructure.”

What are your predictions for the future of the industry?
“I believe that the freight forwarding industry is heading toward a future where technology, collaboration, and sustainability are key drivers of success. We’ll see increased use of AI-based analytics, enabling more accurate forecasting, route optimization, and demand planning. Digitally integrated platforms will streamline operations, offering better transparency and faster response times.

Additionally, as environmental concerns grow, clients will expect greener solutions. Independent forwarders must align with global sustainability goals to remain competitive. At Modern Shipping Agencies, we’re already taking steps in that direction—adopting energy-efficient transport options and improving supply chain visibility.

Despite the challenges, there is great opportunity ahead. Those who adapt, innovate, and maintain a strong focus on client service will continue to thrive.”
