As part of our ongoing series spotlighting WFN members across the globe, World Freight Network (WFN) sat down with Dean Bell, General Manager of Bell Total Logistics Pty Ltd in Australia. A respected member of the network, Dean shared insights into his lifelong connection with the freight forwarding industry, the key strengths that define his company, and his outlook on the future of independent freight forwarding.
For Dean, a career in logistics was practically a given. He’s a second-generation customs broker and freight forwarder who grew up immersed in the business.
“I’ve been around the industry since I was a child,” Dean explains. “During school holidays, I’d be in the office. When I finished school and was waiting for my results, I started working full time in the family business. I’ve never looked back.”
Bell Total Logistics has grown into a highly regarded name in the Australian freight sector, known especially for its people and customs clearance expertise. With a team boasting decades of experience, the company prides itself on stability and long-term client relationships.
“Our strength lies in our people,” Dean says. “We have incredibly low staff turnover. Many of our team have been with the same customers for over 20 years. Our customs clearance department includes professionals with over 40 years in the industry.”
When it comes to challenges in 2025, Dean points to increasing consolidation among major multinational players and shipping lines, which presents both obstacles and openings.
“There’s definitely opportunity when large multinationals merge or are acquired – we can win business from them. But we’re also competing against their deeper pockets and aggressive pricing tactics,” he notes. “Staffing is also a growing issue in Australia. Many companies have offshored to the Philippines, but that quick fix backfires when they need experienced local talent. Those people simply aren’t coming through the ranks anymore, and the wages to attract them are rising fast.”
Dean emphasizes the value of WFN membership in navigating this evolving landscape, particularly when it comes to building trusted, global partnerships.
“WFN offers real financial protection, and it means we only need to travel overseas once a year to connect with reliable partners. That’s a huge advantage,” he says. “It opens doors to new markets and opportunities in a secure business environment.”
Looking ahead, Dean sees technology reshaping parts of the industry, but not replacing it.
“AI will streamline a lot of data-entry processes, and may even replace some offshore roles,” he predicts. “But with governments piling on more legal responsibilities, there will always be a place for experienced professionals in our industry.”
