We recently asked some of our members to share their views on the industry today, the benefits of networking, and their vision for the future. Here are some comments from Michael Li at Ausino International Logistics, China.
How did you start your career in freight forwarding?
“I studied International Trade as my major in college, and since graduation I’ve been working in the international freight forwarding industry, in Ocean freight agency services for goods imported from Europe and America.”
What are your company’s main strengths?
“One: Ocean freight agency services for goods imported from Europe and America.
Two: Export logistics forwarder for China’s international aid projects in the South Pacific, South America, and Africa.”
What are the main challenges facing independent freight forwarders in 2025?
“Geopolitical tensions around the world continue to reshape the global trade landscape. For example, the ongoing trade disputes between major economies like the US and China have led to the imposition of new tariffs and trade restrictions.
These sudden policy changes disrupt traditional trade routes that independent freight forwarders have long relied on. As a result, forwarders must constantly monitor and adapt to these shifts, which requires significant time and resources.
They need to research and establish new routes, often with less established partners in different regions, increasing the complexity of their operations.”
What are the benefits of network membership for independent forwarders?
“For independent forwarders, joining WFN levels the playing field by providing global reach, cost savings, and operational support — without the need for heavy investment in infrastructure.”
What are your predictions for the future of the industry?
“The winners will be forwarders that blend digital agility (e.g. real-time visibility platforms), sustainability leadership, and hyper-local expertise — all while navigating a fractured global trade landscape.
The “traditional broker” model will fade, replaced by integrated, tech-driven logistics partners.”
